GifGen is a web app for visual exploration with AI. It helps designers, founders, and small teams generate brand marks, illustrations, and short looping animations. Unlike one-shot generators that return a single image, GifGen produces a grid of variations from a single prompt, then lets the user select, combine, and refine results through follow-up generations — turning AI image generation into an iterative exploration workflow.

## Provenance

GifGen is built by the team behind the "GIF · Generator" custom GPT on ChatGPT (https://chatgpt.com/g/g-45WfVCFcy), which has ~500,000 unique users. GifGen extends that GIF-generation experience into a full web app: grid generation, style exploration, image combine/remix, upscale, and frame-by-frame animation export.

## Core capabilities

- **Grid generation**: one prompt produces a 1×1, 2×2, 3×3, or 4×4 grid of distinct interpretations.
- **Style mode**: same brief, varied visual directions (wordmark, monogram, pictorial icon, abstract symbol, mascot, emblem, line, gradient, 3D, vintage, modernist, script, and more).
- **Concept mode**: one coherent visual style, varied interpretations of the concept.
- **Animate mode**: a 2×2 / 3×3 / 4×4 grid is rendered as consecutive frames of a short looping animation — same subject, same style, visible motion between frames. The grid acts as a flipbook. Downloadable as an animated GIF directly from the app.
- **Combine**: select two or more generated images and blend them into a new set of remixed variations.
- **Upscale**: re-render any single image at higher resolution.
- **Reference images**: upload or paste an image to use as a visual anchor in any of the modes.

## How it works

1. Type a brief (e.g. "transport company logo with name").
2. Pick a style direction or leave it free.
3. Generate a grid.
4. Select directions you like, then iterate: combine them, explore more styles, or refine with a follow-up prompt.

## Underlying models

GifGen uses Google's Gemini image-generation models (Standard and Pro) and optionally OpenAI's image models, abstracted behind a provider-agnostic adapter. Output ships with an unlimited commercial-use licence for paying users.
